Helping Elementary Teachers Build Mathematical Generality into Curriculum and Instruction

This article explores how elementary teachers can use functional thinking to build algebraic reasoning into curriculum and instruction. In particular, we examine how children think about functions and how instructional materials and school activities can be extended to support students’ functional thinking. Data are taken from a five-year research and professional development project conducted ...

Waves and patterning in developmental biology: vertebrate segmentation and feather bud formation as case studies.

In this article we will discuss the integration of developmental patterning mechanisms with waves of competency that control the ability of a homogeneous field of cells to react to pattern forming cues and generate spatially heterogeneous patterns. We base our discussion around two well known patterning events that take place in the early embryo: somitogenesis and feather bud formation. We outl...

Nanometer-Scale Patterning on PMMA Resist by Force Microscopy Lithography

Nanoscale science and technology has today mainly focused on the fabrication of nano devices. In this paper, we study the use of lithography process to build the desired nanostructures directly. Nanolithography on polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) surface is carried out by using Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) equipped with silicon tip, in contact mode. The analysis of the results shows that the ...

Modeling children's mathematical gift by neural networks and logistic regression

The purpose of the paper was to extract important features of children’s mathematical gift by using neural networks and logistic regression, in order to create a model that will assist teachers in elementary schools to recognize mathematically gifted children in an early stage, therefore enabling further development and realization of that gift. The initial model was created on the basis of a t...
